Lingering Lung Symptoms After COVID-19

Most people recover from COVID-19 within a few weeks. Some keep having symptoms for months, such as shortness of breath, a lingering cough, chest tightness, tiring easily, or not being able to exercise the way they used to. This is often called long COVID or post-COVID condition. When an infection has inflamed or scarred the lungs, breathing problems can last long after the virus is gone. How Stem Cell Therapy May Help

Stem cells from your own fat release signaling proteins called growth factors. Researchers are studying how these cells may calm ongoing inflammation (an effect called immunomodulation) and support the body’s own repair processes in the lungs. This research is ongoing, and stem cell therapy is not FDA-approved for COVID-19 or its after-effects. It is meant to work alongside the care you get from your own doctors, not replace it.

What Treatment Involves

Treatment is done in our Dallas office in one visit. Dr. Bill Johnson, a board-certified physician, numbs a small area about the size of an orange and uses a syringe to collect about 3 tablespoons of fat. The fat is processed to separate the stem cells, which takes about 2 hours. The cells are then given back to you through a simple IV infusion, and you go home the same day. Because these are your own cells, no donor tissue is involved. Every procedure has risks, and Dr. Johnson reviews them with you. The most common side effects are bruising and swelling where the fat was collected.

What to Expect Afterward

Some patients report easier breathing or more energy in the months after treatment. Results vary. Results develop over months, and repeat treatments may be needed.

Who May Be a Candidate

You may be a candidate if you still have breathing problems months after COVID-19, are otherwise in stable health, and have no active infection or cancer. Cost

Treatment is $16,500 for the first treatment, and $10,000 for a second treatment if you and Dr. Johnson decide one is needed. Financing is available.
