Rheumatoid Arthritis Versus Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis - they're the same thing, right? No, actually they are two very different conditions despite their similar names and symptoms. Innovations Stem Cell Center treats both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis with fat stem cell therapy.

How Are Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis Different?

These two conditions differ in type, the location of symptoms, how frequently they occur, when they occur and who they affect.

Type of Disease

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that develops when the body sees the joints as "foreign invaders" and attacks them, causing pain and inflammation. Osteoarthritis develops as a result of wear and tear on the joints, usually associated with aging, injury and overuse.

Symptoms

The symptoms of both conditions are similar - joint pain, stiffness, inflammation and decreased range of motion. People with rheumatoid arthritis also often experience fever, loss of energy and long periods of fatigue with their condition.

Osteoarthritis typically causes swelling in joints such as the knee, hip and back. Other affected areas include the finger joints, toes and the neck.

When Symptoms Strike

The symptoms of osteoarthritis usually develop throughout the day or after activities, while the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis typically show up first thing in the morning or after long periods of inactivity.

Onset of Condition

Most people with rheumatoid arthritis begin showing signs between 30 and 50 years of age, but the condition can develop even in children. Osteoarthritis commonly affects people over the age of 50 but can affect younger individuals under certain circumstances.

Occurrence of Conditions

Of the two conditions, osteoarthritis affects more people - around 27 million Americans. Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 1.3 million people in the United States, although many more may not be diagnosed.

Treatment

Innovations Stem Cell Center treats individuals who are living with osteoarthritis and those who are living with rheumatoid arthritis using fat stem cell therapy. Both groups of patients report seeing improvements in their symptoms after receiving treatment.
